Twitter tests new harassment prevention feature with ‘Safety Mode’
  • Twitter is experimenting with its features the most aggressive anti-harassment to date. The company will begin testing “security mode” new account setting that automatically blocks accounts using “potentially harmful language.” Twitter was first previewed the feature in February during his presentation of analyst day, but is now beginning to make it available to “a small group return information.” It is not clear when it might be available more widely.
  • When enabled, the security mode proactively block the accounts that could be the source of harassment for a period of seven days. Twitter said the system is designed for those accounts that you know or interact frequently are blocked, but the trolls will.
  • “The security mode is a feature that temporarily blocks accounts for seven days to the use of potentially harmful languages, such as insults or hateful remarks – or sending repetitive replies or mentions and uninvited,” Twitter wrote in a blog post. “When the feature is turned on in your settings, our systems will assess the likelihood of a negative pledge by considering both the content of the Tweet and the relationship between the author and the replica Tweet.”
  • While Twitter has taken several steps in the past to address the long-term problem of harassment, the security mode is notable because it takes longer burden the person harassed. Instead of manually blocking, mute and report problem accounts, functionality should be able to catch the offending tweets before they are seen.
  • Because it is still in a relatively early stage, Twitter said it is likely to at least a few errors. And users are able to manually review the tweets and accounts reported by the security mode and reverse defective autoblocages. When the seven-day period ends, users will get a notification “recovery” of the actions of the security mode.
